REPORTS TO: Executive Director


The Director of Development is responsible for implementing comprehensive fundraising programs directed at individuals, corporations, foundations, and government. Support the work of the Executive Director and participate in various internal and external committee appointments as needed. Represent ILACSD throughout the community and communicate consistent messages around ILACSD’s mission, programs, and impact.


  • Oversees and coordinates all initiatives related to fundraising, including prospecting, grant writing, solicitations to individuals, foundations, and corporations, and fundraising events
  • Identifies and pursues appropriate long and short term opportunities to meet the needs of the organization; Works with Executive Director on prospecting and solicitations
  • Serves on the Executive team; participates in executive roles and functions that advance the organization as a whole
  • Fosters positive relationships with elected officials, community groups, local media, and other parties who can assist ILACSD in fulfilling its mission and supply funding.
  • Oversees ILACSD’s government relations
  • Develops and manages goals, work plans, and deliverables for ILACSD fundraising
  • Update individual giving program and oversee implementation
  • Develop and manage ILACSD’s major donor and matching programs
  • Solicit and secure sponsors for cleanup programs
  • Coordinate & manage ILACSD’s fundraising events (small scale)
  • Oversee donor management including updates in donor management database, tracking gifts, reporting, and donor acknowledgement
  • Works with Senior Director of Operations, Finance staff, and program staff on fundraising efforts
  • Attend the organization’s events when needed

  • Fiscal

  • Sets and monitors performance parameters in line with the strategic direction and consistent with development policies and private grant requirements
  • Creates, documents, implements and reports fundraising outcomes
  • Creates budgets for Development in collaboration with the program and financial staff
  • Plays the role of ultimate accountability for legal, moral and prudent operations within ILACSD development
  • Operates, monitors, and accounts for the revenue and expense budget within ILACSD Development

  • Board
  • Engages the board in fundraising and provides support to the board and E.D.; Attends board meetings during sections related to fundraising and development
  • Serves as staff lead on the Board Fundraising committee and works with Board Fundraising Chair to lead committee activities
  • Updates and tracks Board Give & Get contributions
  • Manages the coordination and fundraising for annual board fundraising event


  • At least 2 or more years’ experience and demonstrated success in fundraising, donor relations, and grant writing in a nonprofit organization
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to interact with diverse audiences
  • Self-starter and independently motivated
  • Passion for the environment; knowledge of environmental issues
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to working in a team environment
  • Ability to exercise leadership in strategic planning
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience with DonorPerfect or other donor management software preferred
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Knowledge of San Diego region (preferred)

  • Must have access to reliable transportation and a valid Driver's License.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required to attend donor events.

  • Must be able to lift and move objects up to 30 lbs

    REPORTS TO: Education Manager
    TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time, Non-Exempt
    PAY RATE: $12.50/hour; mileage reimbursement ($0.575 or current CA reimbursement rate)

    The Education Specialist shall be responsible for supporting ILACSD’s Education department to implement its programs, contracts, grants, and events. Duties will include presenting to schools and community organizations, as well as attending events throughout San Diego County. Other duties include marketing and scheduling presentations, and administrative duties.

    Specific duties

  • Coordinate and implement contract and grant programs within ILACSD’s Education department
  • Researching, scheduling, marketing, and delivery of presentations
  • Assist with scheduling & coordinating Program Assistants and Educators as needed
  • Developing and maintaining positive relationships with schools, community groups/organizations, civic organizations, clubs, and governmental agencies
  • Manage the maintenance and care of department supplies, inventory, purchasing, and proper and timely storage
  • Tracking and reporting of delivered and scheduled presentations
  • Assist with the Education Department events (Kids Ocean Day, After School Programs, Nearby Nature)
  • Assist with curriculum development and department planning
  • Attendance at various community events
  • Other

  • Attend community meetings when appropriate to further expand organization’s presence in the community
  • Additional organizational and community support as necessary
  • Other duties to support the ILACSD team

  • College degree and environmental and/or education background/experience
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to educate, inspire, and empower
  • Commitment to working in a team environment
  • Effective communication skills for diverse audiences
  • Experience working with youth and children, teaching experience
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups
  • Ability to work occasional weekends
  • Microsoft Office proficiency (especially PowerPoint)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
  • Reliable transportation; ability and willingness to travel
